What ROI tells you
Return on investment (ROI) measures how much you gained relative to what you put in, as a percentage. It lets you compare investments of different sizes on the same scale — a 50 profit on 100 (50% ROI) beats a 50 profit on 500 (10% ROI).
How it works

The formula
ROI = (final value − cost) ÷ cost × 100. Example: cost 1,000, final value 1,300 → net 300, ROI 30%. Annualized ROI = ((final ÷ cost)^(1 ÷ years) − 1) × 100, which spreads the total return evenly across the years to give a per-year rate.
What ROI leaves out
Basic ROI ignores time (unless you annualize), and it does not account for risk, taxes, fees, or inflation. Use it as a quick comparison, not a full financial picture — two investments with the same ROI can differ a lot in risk and timing.
